It's not their fault you didn't do research/see the patterns. It's wasn't an inside job. Quite the opposite, it was people protecting their money by putting a stop-loss on their holdings.

This is what I call a cascading stop-loss (much like a cascading failure) in that when people group up their stop-losses (unintentionally) it creates domino-like effect of selling down.
