Yes but they don’t need to still be alive for those last moments between the stunner and the knife.
They could just as easily be stunned to death and then bled immediately after.
( grew up with grandma next door who’d kill and prepare a chicken for us every year at Xmas ).
If we look in to the halal scan we note that it demands the animal be alive/conscious at the time of being killed.
