This was posted on another thread by holymagimon, I hope he doesn't mind if I copied it here, because it is basically what the US needs to do here.
They need to build an enrichment and recycling plant, they certainly need it, they then need to sell those assets in a similar fashion to what the NSW government has done, and is then reinvesting the money from that back into new infrastructure.
It is the US themselves that have the nuclear waste problem and also a problem with supplying nuclear fuel for their reactors instead of importing the Russian stuff, they need to build this and prove that it is viable and then they need to sell it to a gold ole US company, once it is proven completely and is a going concern it would be worth much more as a sale, so they then get more money to spend on infrastructure.
