In scientific or precision engineering you would expressing microns as a unit of a metre. When I was on the tools I'd machine a part to a given tolerance defined as microns for precision stuff an a decimal unit of a millimetre for less precise requirements. Example +/- .25mm is a generous tolerance. However a tolerance stating say +/- .002 is quite a tight tolerance.
