Tesla is all media hype and marketing, many are thinking the same as you, Tesla will last as long as people are willing to keep funding it, it won't turn a profit any time in the forseeble future..and it's not such the behemoth many think it is... clever marketing and mainstream media onside. China, India, Asean, BRICS are the markets that will really matter...where do the top car manufacturers by sales currently come from whether conventional or EV?

BJEV’s sales of electric vehicles almost doubled to 103,199 in 2017. The company said it boosted its share of the Chinese electric-vehicle market to an estimated 23 per cent last year, from 15 per cent in 2016.
China surpassed the US in 2015 to become the world’s biggest market for new-energy vehicles as both traditional automakers and a bevy of start-ups work to meet the government’s target to boost yearly sales of plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars tenfold in the next decade. China has made electric vehicles a strategic initiative as part of its push to lead in automotive technology, curb pollution and cut dependence on imported oil.

Like Tesla’s enormous market capitalization, the outsized mind share of the California carmaker is hard to reconcile with its true market share. A look at the sales data shows that noisy Tesla is quietly being outsold by the true pioneer in the electric vehicle field, the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The Alliance may get no respect from a media that hangs on to every Musk tweet, but it sure gets the customers.
In the first quarter of 2017, the Renault-Nissan Alliance moved nearly 37,000 electric vehicles, per data supplied by the automakers. That is some 12,000 units, or nearly 50%, more than the 25,000 electric vehicles Tesla said were shipped by the company in the first quarter.

BYD isn’t well-known outside of its home market, China. But it’s the world’s largest maker of electric vehicles–sorry, Tesla–and is growing rapidly and expanding globally.
Seeded with $300,000 in capital, Wang Chuanfu founded BYD as a maker of rechargeable batteries in 1995. The company, whose name is an acronym for “Build Your Dreams,” later diversified into consumer electronics, mobile phones, lighting, solar modules, and energy storage. Today, however, BYD is most known for vehicles. In addition to ones with combustible engines, it manufactures electric and plug-in hybrid taxis, coaches, consumer cars, logistics vehicles, sanitation trucks, heavy equipment, and off-road vehicles.
As for electric passenger vehicles, the company sold 70,000 of them globally during the first three-quarters of 2017. Within China, the world’s largest electric vehicle market, government subsidies and purchases boosted domestic brands. Additionally, car registration can take years in cities like Beijing, which uses a lottery system. However, buyers of new energy vehicles—a term used in the country which encompasses electric cars and plug-in hybrids—are fast-tracked.
Chinese tariffs and taxes on imported electric vehicles also benefit domestic manufacturers, which capture 93% of the market. BYD has an estimated 30% share. Tesla has 6% share, delivering an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 vehicles to China in 2016.

Six of the 10 major car companies that appear committed to electrification of their vehicle lines are Chinese. Most of them have international partners, but the international partners are mostly the four that have equivalent commitments.
