The high price of Sc is down to rarity - once it becomes commercially available enough to be useful on a mass manufacturing scale the price will fall... so the Sconi reserves may no be worth near as much but there will be a sufficient market for them. It's a bit chicken and egg - I like to think of it about the same as aluminium - it only became useful once the price to produce dropped to a commercially viable level. What that level is with scandium might be is the $1 million question but I'm guessing it's about 2/3 of the current...
