    Gold was confiscated during the depression, but much of it was hidden in pianos and the like and never handed over. Owners were compensated at the going rate at the time, so no one was out of pocket.

    The idea that it could happen again is absurd, central banks are not highly geared, you've been reading too many of those loony conspiracy theories on internet forums.

    During the GFC it was the Federal Reserve that came to the rescue.
