I have an acquaintance who has idolized Trump ... been following his every move avidly for many years. Because of him ... I looked into some of Trump's history. One thing I came across is an old interview Trump did for Playboy [about 20+ years ago]... in which he goes on and on about how Japan is ripping the USA off with unfair trade practices and the bad deals US Gvt does.... you could easily just substitute China in the narrative and you would be fully up to date with the Trump mindset.
Six months into Trump's tenure ... my acquaintance had become thoroughly disenchanted with Trump and now longer cares to talk about him ... now reckons he is a big disappointment...
Trump got into power ....imo... because of the general population's desire to 'live the American dream'... the years under Obama saw a major transference of wealth and power to the already rich and a marked diminution of the middle class... I believe for the average person the notion that hard work would lead to success became too faint a possibility .... then Trump comes along and promises to 'make America great again' which loosely translates into he can restore the power of the 'American Dream'... and together with the fact he is a self made billionaire [albeit done on credit] he offered enough street cred to sustain that hope. I think it is the unwillingness of the Trump voters to give up on that hope which is the foundation of Trump's support.
Essentially Trump got into office by using the same psychology used by Obama .. i.e "yes we can" and "change we can believe in" ... Trump's slogan 'maga' taps into the same rich vein ... profound discontent. At some point I think his support base is going realize that Trump has lied to them ... and when that day comes things will get nasty.
