if you are expecting all customers to be as patient with the product as the people invested in it you'll be in for some disappointment i think.
Accessibility is key and a lot of good products fall by the wayside to make way for easier to use inferior products.
I think initial real user feedback is invaluable. Maybe better delivered to the company than an over protective forum, but if including a prompt to update firmware with the product brings someone's review or it from a 2.5/5 to a 4.5/5 it's a no brainer.
non tech savvy people know to update their computers and phones because both devices are borderline intrusive with their prompts to do so. I've never updated my Bluetooth headphones and would expect a high end product to work out of the box.
that being said obviously you get the most out of a product once you've mastered it.
