Graphite: Posco to build smart factory for graphite anode production
Roskill view: Posco Chairman Kwon Oh-joon has announced new plans to build a smart factory that has an automation system to produce high quality anode materials for rechargeable batteries.
During a visit to Posco Chemtech, a subsidiary of the South Korean steel giant that produces anode materials in Sejong, south of Seoul, Kwon said the company would have an automated system capable of producing 30,000 tpy by 2020.
“Demand for medium and large secondary batteries in the anode materials market is rapidly increasing due to electric cars, energy storage systems and so on,” said Kwon during his visit to Posco Chemtech.
As Roskill’s Economics and Analytics Director, Thomas Höhne-Sparborth, pointed out at a recent presentation at Metal Bulletin’s 5th international nickel conference lithium-ion batteries should be called nickel-graphite batteries and are heavier consumers of graphite (in their anodes) than they are of lithium.
