Hi Froggy
Blaspheming is quite offensive to many including myself. I appreciate that identity politics and too easily claiming to be offended are widespread problems, but would hope that there are other ways people can express most things, without much difficulty. As I see it, in general blasphemy occurs when the speaker/writer is using language they hear quite frequently in workplace, or at school so it doesn't seem unusual.
I don't think it is often deliberately used to offend, more often to establish that the speaker writer is a knockabout unpretentious type to put audience at ease. I did this myself as a teenager. But there are downsides to this and any in any case, many other ways to establish rapport with anyone, usually by taking genuine interest in them and being pleasant.
I have worked extensively in mines and drill sites, factories and construction sites as well as corporate offices and boardrooms. It is very easy to accidentally parrot what you have heard in one place in another, but hard to stop once it has become a habit. With practice you can learn some substitute words to replace any swear words or blaspheming words, so they come out automatically. Eg shoot instead of s-it.
My wife kindly reminded me that a word beginning with f--- (that has regrettably become common in so called comedy Cubs and "gritty" TV dramas), had crept back into my vocabulary and that it would cause me embarrassment if I accidentally used it in front of my grandchildren or my sons and daughters in law, who either never swore or long ago beat the habit.
Jesus Christ is a person who had a long lasting influence on civilisation, and for many, including myself is much more than a human being, but God in a human form. The reason for this is much discussed in Christian churches this coming weekend, and I would invite you to pop into one about 10am next Sunday. You should find people only too happy to discuss this wth you if you so desire.
