I believe the biggest requirement is a channel that follows the western side of the Great Dividing range and every 500 km or so it can be connected to the headwaters of the Murray Darling and tributaries. The big dams should be in the south as they would be deeper and cooler and result in less evaporation. If this sort of national infrastructure was started after the Snowy was completed the Murray Darling basin would be twice as big as the present and all crops could be grown. My national plan for the present would be to be building a channel or spillway from the Gulf Country of about 20 to 50 km down over relatively flat land to several large turkey's nest dams in the gulf country to trap water temporarily. Then pumping would begin as soon as floodwaters arrived. That would be immediately pumped using solar power and battery storage to connect to the Warrego--about 600 to 1000km of pipes depending on the use of other watercourses already present such as the Paroo. We could do that in a decade and have much more ware security. Meanwhile we should begin a pipeline from the Ord to Tennant Creek and down to Alice Springs to open up a Northern food bowl with easy access to the port of Darwin. The land there is good for horticulture as well as fodder production or cereals and pulse crops. The reason for this is that there are only 3 regions in Australia that are expected to get wetter in the future--the North West of WA , The Gulf Country and North East Tasmania. The rest is expected to get drier so we have to plan ahead before the Murray Darling is destroyed by drought and incompetence of politicians.

Sorry fast breeder reactors are expensive duds, one in Germany cost $5 billion eventually closed down because of high operating cost, sold dirt cheap and turned into an amusement park! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superphénixhttps://www.*.com/nuclear-power-plant-into-amusement-park-2016-4/?r=AU&IR=T
