    The Rolls Royce thruster is based around old tech that has been in ships (tugs, DP vessels and such) for decades. The electrical side to it is more recent tech if the have refined the permanent magnet.

    Magnetohydrodynamic drive or MHD propulsion, now that is modern tech, again based on concepts developed 40 or more years ago. Benefit is no moving parts so so noise signature.
