I think that it's a bit more complicated than that.
At his trial Jesus used the same term as God did when identifying himself at the burning bush incident. The religious authorities had no doubt that Jesus was claiming that he was God - they wanted him crucified.
Jesus never corrected Thomas when he (Thomas) addressed Jesus as "my Lord and my God".
People ague black and blue whether or not Jesus called himself God. That is the nature of religion.
