"I wonder whether you are expecting much in religious doctrine to make sense."
No need to wonder. There is necessarily much in religious doctrine that makes no sense.
Religions that demand absolute submission and obedience accumulate those who for whatever reasons derive reassurance and comfort from that method. There are also those willing to conform outwardly when necessary though inwardly they may be free from it.
"And do you really expect to understand the doctrine of the Trinity? As far as I know it is only in recent human history that we have explored the concept of the threesome. "
The idea of the Creative force or "Entity" with 3 aspects is not uncommon. The particular Christian formulation is recent but didn't come from nowhere and was probably used among other things, to legitimise primacy to their founder Jesus in the "my God is bigger than your God" stakes.
No doubt the vast majority of "trinity" Christians have never given a second thought to it but just accept as with so much else that it must be so ... because that's what they were told.
Notice how poor old wotsup tries to engage other Christians using the many Biblical verses that eventually led him to a non trinity position ... but all they do is come back with the same few misinterpreted verses or just constant appeals to authority.
It is interesting how easily Biblically based Christians accept that the Bible must be God's word because they claim the Bible says it is !
Nothing wrong with believing that on faith I suppose, but it's a bit odd to see how this "God's inerrant word" is put forward as if it was fact rather than faith.
People can be quite interesting.
