volume is one of the key indicators used by trading software.
if a share is perceived to be illiquid then it struggles to attract interest. sort of a feedback loop. generate volume and you will generate volume.
i did notice last week that a few times when i put a buy order on, the highest order automatically jumped above mine again. each time i bumped it a point higher, the top bid jumped up again. when it got to within a point or two of the first sell order, both the top buy and top sell suddenly disappeared. when i took my bid off, both orders reappeared after 5 minutes, at the highest price + or - 1 point.
make of it what you will, but it certainly isnt transparent trading.
