Yes that does seem a bit expensive but
That $29.95 transation fee is set at that price all the way up to a maximum of a $10,000, trade though then afterwards its a straight .3% percent total for amounts over $10,000 so a $50,000 trade would cost a all up total of $150 all up.
Actually since just after that friend made that trade my trading platform (ASB) now offer a $15 flat fee for any trade up to $1000, which that was not the case until just a few months ago, so now the ASB is only $4 more than your $11 fee, so I'm OK with that as I don't get any bank fees from asb but actually instead earn interest on deposits in that bank account with them, and they have good automated systems that I like and its easy researching companies with their stuff they supply.
I try to buy stuff with the intention to hold long term and therefore generally don't often sell (unless something fundermental adversley changes within the company)
