Approximately 250,000 Australians live in areas where there is no mobile coverage. That includes Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. The landmass that is not covered would stun you. There is, for example, a weekend ritual of blokes going through their 15th childhood riding powerful motorbikes from Sydney up into the Hunter on a well known loop back to Sydney, who almost on a weekend basis kill or maim themselves in areas where no mobile coverage exists. The route north via a town called Wollombi and back down through Windsor has between 25 to 40 percent of no coverage areas. The Eastern seaboard has a range of hills called the Great Divide, where huge areas are not covered all the way from Cape York to just outside Melbourne. Tasmania, SA,WA and NT are not any better. If you reflect upon how much of Australias income from mining and primary production relies on these deprived areas you start to think that we could as a nation do this a lot better. Yes I have NBN Satellite, which if you can remember dial up internet speed, you will get an idea of its efficiency. You cringe when there is a thunderstorm within a 100 km, because everything will go down. I find it increasingly hard to do business when organizations and businesses demand to have a mobile number from you ( absurdly saying that landlines are security risks _ goodbye ING Bank and Firstchoice Liquor )
