The Overseas Investment Act is designed to help cool NZs runaway house prices (faster than Oz or UK) by putting strict controls on non-resident buyers (something that should have been done here many years ago). The housing shortage for locals is apparently desperate.
But the IMF thinks this measure is discriminatory and advances a cartload of economic effluent to support its opinion that other fiscal measures could do the job.
However we all know, or should know, that the IMF is a branch office of Globalism Inc and what they REALLY don't like is a whiff of economic nationalism and national sovereignty blowing in from the South Seas, especially from a supposedly progressive Labor govt.
Will the NZ govt buckle?
