    The argon as a control experiment would give a hint as to by which mechanism that the infrared sensor can no longer detect the candle flame at the end of the tube.

    Wouldn’t you be curious to see how that experiment worked with other gases? Gases of similar molecular weight to CO2 but of differing infrared absorption properties.

    I would also be curious to see the experiment performed with an infrared ray lamp.

    I would also run the experiment for 5, 10, 20 minutes to check again that some other mechanism is not in play.

    Any idea of the parameters of the IR sensor?
