Yesterday I created a thread called the Energy Cost Debate. Rather than repeat those views I'll just post what I said in the opening post. See embedded post below.
In summary it is obvious that if we want reliable, secure and low cost energy (especially for meeting the requirements of large scale industry) coal and gas has an obvious place in generating base load power. To get that benefit an energy policy also needs to recognise past failings as well in what happens when you give a public monopoly to the private sector and what happens when you discourage investment through talking down col and gas. The issues are numerous and a holistic response to the energy debate is needed.
