They mentioned a thicker overburden in a brief read I had. Seismic is measured in time and converted to depth based on estimates of velocity of sound in the rock layers. Get the estimate wrong, and the time to depth conversion is wrong... and hence the reservoir target is actually much deeper than thought. So why didn't they simply drill deeper to intersect it? Well this depth could be then below structural spill point or below a depth where the accumulation would be commercial due to a revised geological structural outcome. Alternatively, they couldn't drill any deeper due to pressure limitations in their existing hole size, I would be surprised if they weren't carrying a 7" casing contingency though. This is not a case of they steered the well in the wrong direction, it's a case of their base case structural model was wrong... which is normal, it's always wrong and there are always surprises.
