Here's Old Boz's understanding of the origin of one of Andrew Loyd Webber's best compositions.
I couldn't possibly say if it's true or not.
Willie had just gone to prison for bigamy.
After a long marriage to Marjorie (see where this is going?) he began an affair with Tina, down the street, and was so besotted with her, he convinced her to run away with him, and they went through a form of marriage.
Long story short, they blued and Tina dobbed him in.
ALW must have seen his sorry letter to them and adapted it.
I have thought long and hard about this, it's the only explanation.
Or
It's a Mondagreen . (Look it up)
