I find this absolutely disgusting. There are so many things wrong with this I can't believe the relevant authorities haven't intervened to put a stop to it.
Thomas is actually profiting from the tragedy at the expense of the shareholders. When you consider that she was the person ultimately responsible for ensuring the safety of the rides and actually in a position to do so unlike the shareholders - this idea just rankles.
Surely it has to be a contravention of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. I know this law is normally applied to prevent notorious criminals from making "honest" profits out of the publicity of their crimes, but surely there has to be an application for it here. In the likely event that the inquest finds that this was an act of criminal negligence, surely this law would have to be applied to Thomas.
She would have to provide evidence at the inquest anyway. She has a legal obligation to do so. Is she going to withhold evidence and risk the consequences of doing so if she doesn't collect her daily appearance fee?
It's also a conflict of interest on a number of fronts:
- How can the inquest be sure that she is giving unbiased testimony when she's being paid for it?
- It's a conflict of interest in that she has some degree of influence over the length of time the inquest will take. If she is required to give evidence it is in her best financial interest to give that evidence as slowly as possible, whether that means wasting time by providing irrelevant details or using other tactics.
The more I think about it, the more I can't believe it's being allowed to happen. Surely the relevant authorities have to intervene and put a stop to it!
