Bigfatsirion -funny you should mention that- Ive actually got a share in 11 bronze cannons in my old company "north Caribbean research" We pulled them up from an old 1803 Napleonic french warship we excavated off monti christi in the Domincan Republic. . We never got the 5 boxes of gold coins she went down with, (USD 250 million++ each box) -but one day my US partners 15 year old kid did find one box while vaccuming deep in the mud at the bottom with the airlift tube. (we found many many old boxes of stuff in the mud- but not the gold) . He broke it open underwater and soon burst to the suface 200 metes away from our main boat shouting all excitedly "Dad, Dad -ive found a box of gold coins !!- and held a handful up to try and show us- we jumped into the dingy giving each other high fives...rich at last...and sped over to him, But as we got there he said " look look!! but why do they have little hoops on one side "...... he had found a box of bronze miltary button for the soldiers -only bronze and gold do not oxidise under the sea and so the decorated buttons sat glistening in the box in the low visibilty muddy waters as he had opened it. We think the gold boxes being heavier had sunk too far down inot the mud over the years(it was in the mouth of a big river).
