Ask local business owners (not the staff) for referrals to an accountant.
Try popping into your local chamber of commerce or traders association or BNI group or council supported business group.
Typically Mortgage Brokers, IT Support companies, Lawyers, Financial Advisors, Bookkeeppers will all have accountants as both suppliers, referral partners and as customers.
It will be in their best interest to refer you to someone who is competent as they will want to appear to you as a trusted advisor in the hope you will come back to them to use their own services.
On the flip side, if you end up with a dodgy/rubbish accountant, then you have also learnt of a local business owner that you shouldn't ask again for advice. ;-)
