But in many cases they were no better even with air bags.

I have driven Volvo's for the last 40 years and an old Volvo is still safer than a new toy car made out of tin foil and having air bags

Also there is restrictive visibility because of housing the airbags. My little old Mazda gave me instant and superb visibility - no comparison so airbags come with downsides to safety imo.
