Not only the pitch, the MCG as a Stadium itself might need replacement. The bollards and lack of security from the Punt Road end to the Jolimont and Pullman Hotel precinct may make it uneconomical in the future, the car parking has never been good even in the 60s when Bill Larry would block away all day and no one bothered to turn up let alone drive. Then you have the different transport links, Jolimont, Richmond metros and the trams, hardly a world class sporting facility, an outdated relic of a century long since past.

Only ex Victorian Premier John Cain Jnr ever loved the MCG joint and that was only because of the commercial success of the heritage listed VFL Park, his MCC membership and the fact that he lived in the much poorer Darebin area whereas most of Melbourne that like the more popular VFL Park lived in the affluent South East of Melbourne much closer to Mulgrave’s VFL Park, the good shopping and entertainment venues in the South East IMHO.

Everyone else wanted the MCG’s concrete cancer in the old southern stand to spread and would not mind the place being beaten to events by a stadium something better. That is why the secondary stadia, Docklands andMelbourne Rectangular/ AAMI Park are always much smaller to the disappointment of Victorians and not meant to compete against the MCG.

Because the MCG without its monopoly would be discredited to the degree that most Melburnians would not want to be put on the waiting list for MCC membership for 40 seconds let alone 40 years.

In my book, the sooner the MCG with its drop in pitches and lack of performance is turned into the cabbage patch that in truth it has always been, and a new 90,000 spectator stadium or like VFL Park should have been 136000 seated spectators, the better.

The Victorian Government should think big and move away from the 1950s architecture and sub-standard MCG.

Seems you obviously haven't experienced been at the 'G' with 100,000 fan's/electrifying atmosphere etc.
