PolyNovo® congratulates Prof John Greenwood and Dr Marcus Wagstaff on winning “Best in Category- Wounds” for their Poster, Changing Practice in the surgical management of major burns-delayed definitive closure, at the American Burn Association (ABA) meeting in Chicago.
Their Poster outlines the improved outcomes achieved by delaying the closure of the wound through skin grafting by using NovoSorb BTM to temporise the wound. Autologous grafting is the accepted standard of care, but the use of NovoSorb BTM is changing that.
On admission a gentleman with 71% TBSA burn had the burn excised. Day 3 his torso and hands were closed with autologous grafts which is the accepted standard of care. His remaining areas, arms and legs, where treated with NovoSorb BTM as there was inadequate donor skin available for further closure.
On day 32 post application of NovoSorb BTM the limb’s NovoSorb BTM were delaminated and grafted. At day 400 post-surgery the limbs treated with NovoSorb BTM had significantly reduced scaring, improved skin suppleness and better function than the areas treated with autologous grafts (torso).
This case has changed the standard of care for burn patients at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The use of NovoSorb BTM, to temporise the wounds, allows for stabilisation of the patient’s condition, development of a neo-dermis and moves the grafting for closure to a time that better suits the clinical condition of the patient and the availability of adequate donor sites.
