    How Gold is Mined Today

    The days of lonely prospectors with pans are largely behind us. Modern gold mining typically falls into two categories:
    • Open-Pit Mining: Large-scale excavations used when gold is near the surface. Massive amounts of rock (overburden) are removed to reach the ore.

    • Underground Mining: Used for deeper deposits. This involves sinking shafts and driving tunnels to reach narrow veins of gold-bearing rock.
