Except that, based on conventional understanding of something that is "update", it connotes some sort of new information about which an audience might otherwise not be aware.
As such, the acid test is whether the audience would by materially uninformed if such an "update" was not provided.
Not sure about you; you might have been spending time deeply contemplating whether or not the DMC was going to call for the trial to be modified, but I'll wager that the market at large would have taken it as a given that the trial would proceed to its conclusion as planned.
In my experience, when company managers put out announcements such as this - which are ...uh... decidedly light on new material information that is relevant - they seldom do so for the sake of it.
