Because that is effectively what the rain is doing
As for the depth of trenches
6 meters means more resource
So if you could dig past 4 meters why wouldn’t you ??
And a cut of grade is essential
Because ponds plant etc is going to be sized
To the grade
Eg a resource that is 10000 mg will require
Half the pond size of a resource of 5000 mg
A 2000 mg brine being pumped in will
Require
2.5 times as long evaporation as a 5000 brine
Meaning pond neads to be 2.5 times bigger
To achieve the same evap time
It also alters the mass balance
Salt ratios etc
