It's a vexed question, seems to me. The industry shakeout brought on by the online Amazon centred onslaught, has two key and contrasting elements, on my viewing.
On the one hand, if you are small, you are going to have to be kind of "nichey" and offer good service, and thus have good sales staff. Otherwise you'll be of diminishing interest to suppliers.
On the other hand, if you are large and offer a good distribution network, with showrooms, you'll probably continue being of interest to suppliers. Ironically, in this case, with the information that is available online, I suspect knowledgable staff are less critical than what they used to be.
Regarding "competition". Agreed. Has there ever been a time when this space was lacking competition?
Definitely more intersting closer to $3.
