I work for an "RnD" department. In our department the biggest expense is the salary. Capital investments like servers, research equipment could be amortised over time. In fact, I just convinced management to get a bunch of these as an experiment for a project.

Its considered cheap if a 100K server saves time in development over 5 years. $10.5m for something they are trying to achieve and more usage of DST is cheap. You don't want to pay peanuts to get monkeys for a potential 30bil market do you?
