@Kotaredrew
No offence taken. Takes a bit more than that to really rattle me (no pun intended) and to be honest I have been thinking about whether or not to expose some more of my logic to people here. Initially I wasn’t going to because well, this is HC and you should not listen to anything here, right? However, perhaps in the spirit of gaining additional insight from people here it is useful to put myself out there a bit more. Maybe there is something to learn here both for me as well as the crew here. Happy to take flak if that is justified, although I’m usually not that happy to degenerate down to personal attacks, intended or not.
Most of you will remember some time ago I bought 500k of ANW at 3.7c. Remember that? At the time I was looking at charts and volume movements and the fundamentals. I genuinely thought ANW was in the middle of wave3 (for those that follow wave theory) - probably a remnant of a training course I did to learn trading some time ago. My position in ANW was up 130% at that point. My thinking was G2 is getting built, near term revenue, Tin is demand, getting Cobalt hits. Can’t go wrong. So buy decision to go long on the premise we were heading to 5-8c range.
Low and behold, chart turns out a double top and we’re heading into low 2c. We’re here now. Also at the same time, elsewhere in my portfolio everything was getting hit and to be honest I reached a point when I simply had enough of losing value (even though I didn’t realise losses). Plus I had banked up a capital loss in my portfolio roughly to the tune of the ANW gain.
So once I realised what was happening with G2 and the SP heading into 2c territory I simply dumped the whole position and banked the benefit, wiped my capital loss and went cash heavy. I sat on the sideline thinking how do I then benefit from this?
At roughly the same time, I got visibility of 4 major opportunities. One from @blister and the rest from other sources. blister will tell you that KRC has done well and continues to. I did some heavy research of that before getting in. To a point when I knew it was winner. Big time. I even found chemical process flow doco on their product so I was very comfortable that they would hit the purity targets. Big position which continues to grow.
One I discarded as not likely. The 2 remaining ones have paid off even more handsomely. Not bragging. Just stating fact which helped to generate much needed free carry capacity so that if ANW returned to growth path, I could easily get back in.
I have also learnt that some people should be listened to here. While it may not appear that way, and there may always be hidden agendas, I think this crew has been generally very good. @87 Crash and @blister are two such people. Brilliant minds although at very different spectrum of experiences. Sorry guys for calling this and hope you don’t get offended. I have a good radar for people and respect your opinions and always keen to learn.
What I’ve also noticed that this group seems to have a pattern. People post both positive and negative views but rarely does constructive discussion take place. The real benefit here in HC is not advice or finding new stocks or even boasting about returns etc. It’s the collaboration and other people’s insights. Often expressed as a single sentence that pushes you in a different direction. I often catch myself saying “sheet, I hadn’t thought of that but great point”. I investigate, I read and research into areas I literally know nothing about. Well I do after the research but never in a million years would I have thought I would be reading chemistry research papers, let along actually understand them.
My old man is a engineer. Knows his sheet, chemistry, process flow etc. used to work at the Canberra sewage works as a process engineer. So I checked a few things with him. I dare say he was actually impressed with the analysis. He probably thought I was going mad - IT guy here (mainly), then I told him what my portfolio was doing. Now he wants to trade - go figure.
Lastly, believe me or not (even though my sentiment below is none/not held). I am bullish on ANW. I think the CEO is doing a good job, not a stellar job. Delays are expected and ANW has had a few. I think I actually did make a call some months ago that they seem to usually have a 6 months slippage. Anyway, in my situation I simply used that knowledge to my advantage and as of the last 2 weeks am in a great position to accelerate my strategy.
Here, I’ve given you a small bit of insight into my thinking process, the errors that made me think/rethink and my approach for improving the situation. Some would say, nah just portfolio management, others probably call me a hypocrite, whatever the name, I took steps because I wasn’t going to sit and wait for results to materialise from thin air. Holding long is absolutely my preferred strategy, forever. But that’s not the only strategy I use.
I hope my late night brain dump helps and quiets down some of the negativity. I am not blameless and I hope constructive conversation can continue both on positive and negative points. Regardless if you are a holder, or just looking for the next entry point.
