I used to fly to misima from cairns in the early ninties as crew. Awesome place and still very promising. The whole island chain has had good shows in the past. I remember a guy from Poons catering telling me they had found a very rich ore body but Placer shut it down shortly after that due to the gold price.
They used to do the roads with ore that was still grading 2 grams/tonne.
All the waste was dumped off the jetty - it was two mile down so it all just slid off into oblivion.
Flew in there about a year ago and you can hardly see the old mine - all overgrown. Plenty of mine workers there as the reason I was there was to pick up the workers to take back to Lihir for Newcrest. The only risk is that it is in PNG. The chinese will probably get it in the end. I watch with keen interest.
