In 2015 subsurface brines yielded about half of the world's lithium production. Whereas seawater contains about 0.17 mg/l, subsurface brines may contain up to 4,000 mg/l, more than four orders of magnitude greater than sea water. Typical commercial lithium concentrations are between 200 and 1,400 mg/l.
