Acknowledging that all of the news reports we seeing, whilst well intentioned, are really speculation, I noticed the following dates that are more meaningful:

"The National Agricultural Statistics Service will issue its first almond crop forecast of the 2018 season May 10. It is a subjective forecast, where growers are surveyed about the size of the crop they see on their trees.
NASS' objective almond forecast, which involves counting and weighing nuts on trees in representative orchards, will be issued July 5.
Even with estimates for the 2018 crop weeks away, Phippen said the recent frost scare has pushed prices up 40 to 50 cents per pound across the board for the small amount of remaining 2017 almond crop. And the higher prices seem to be holding even for the 2018 crop."
The reality is that until the July 5th assessment, reports will probably be high on rhetoric, and light on hard facts. So it's another 10-11 weeks before the US situation will be defined with any certainty.
