I am aware of the old API. I am keen to hear of customers using the new API. I think in the last 8 years it will be better, and given they just reworked the whole setup, I am hopeful to see some interesting ideas.
The 'Disrupt the Disrupters' part of the developers page at: https://developers.freelancer.com/
has a few ideas, but I think the really interesting things will emerge outside the company.

And, of course, sometimes ideas are ahead of their time. I lost money when Webvan went broke in 2001, yet Coles and Woolies are doing well with home delivered groceries in 2018.
