for the first time in decades, watso had some oats.
it seems that oats only need about 30 minutes to cook in the thermos - eg at this link the steel cut oats cook in about 30 minutes
for what it is worth, but watso was not too impressed with his first effort - but there is room for obvious improvement - eg watso used 3/4 cup of oats - not steel cut (with 2.25 cups of water) - in a narrow thermos. even though watso gave the thermos a bit of a shake, and laid the thermos on the side - most of the oats simply stuck to the bottom of the thermos.
next time watso will put the hot water in the thermos first, then add the oats, and give a more vigorous shake.

anyway, while the oats were cooking on one thermos, watso was cooking a fillet of smoked cod in another - and now cooking 4 eggs in a thermos
