The trial failure you have referanced was a stand alone drug that was hoped would work better when combined with a PD-1 blocker.
So, the idea here is, PD-1 inhibitors are supposed to take the brakes off the immune system, and Epacadostat was supposed to essentially boost that. Now Keytruda and Opdivo, which is Bristol-Myers' drug, have both been at the center of this revolution that we've seen in cancer care with the PD-1 Inhibitors. The broad goal has been, these PD-1 inhibitors look like they're going to be some kind of standard of care. Maybe it's in second or third line, depending on the cancer and what the data says and all of that. But, if you can't beat them, join them. So, let's go ahead and try to join these drugs with our drugs and see what happens. This was, in many ways, a very surprising failure because past phase 2 data had been so good.
However as you have mentioned Imugene has what I also beleave to be very credable team so hopefully this sort of thing won't happen on their watch. IMU is not so much involved here like Incyte was with the aim of combining a drug (Epacadostat ) with a immuno drug.
Instead Imugene is looking at a new B cell delivery platform which should replace for example the old T-cell PD-1 with Imugenes new B cell polyclonal PD-1 instead, then if "others" (companies) want to try to improve that response by attaching their drugs to it like Incyte tried to do with that monoclonal PD-1 , then it would be at the other companies risk, but if it works then both companies and patients would stand to gain.
