The Mt. Pass ore beneficiation process is based on flotation and produces a concentrate that can be cracked with either sulfuric or hydrochloric. Lynas' LAMP and Chinese refiners use sulfuric acid.
At Mt. Pass, hydrochloric acid is used for cracking. It has some serious pros (can be recycled) and cons (aggressive on steels). The chloralkali plant is just the recycling plant for the reagents used in cracking and separation.
