City, that CNN report suggested that China was preparing to whack additional tariffs on pistachios and other nuts from the US.
As you noted previously, California is the largest exporter of pistachios in the world. So if China was to hit Californian pistachios with the proposed tariffs, it follows that Australian pistachio growers would be set to enjoy a significant competitive advantage.
Now, the Chinese were certainly talking turkey, having announced yesterday that they will immediately impose the suggested 15% tariff on US nut exports.
Given this situation, AAP should start looking to fast track the new agri project that they have been talking about for some years.
Local pistachios will be one of the crops to benefit most from the new China tariffs, given California is the second largest grower and the largest exporter.
Australian almonds would be a winner too, as California is by far the largest almond grower and exporter.
It looks like the time is right for a move into a new crop, and with this situation with the new China tariffs, almonds or pistachios are probably the best bet.
