    That’s... probably not a good thing. Most synthetic plastics (note: there’s lots of different ones, so the idea of a super saviour organism that can “digest plastic” is quite naïve) are uncharged and hydrophobic. The thing about uncharged, hydrophobic particles: the smaller they are, the more easily they can cross cell membranes. Foreign particles blundering around inside eukaryotic cells have a habit of causing Bad Things to happen.

    As for the Carlin quote, remember: evolution doesn’t work by existing organisms adapting to the new conditions. It works by killing off everything that isn’t, allowing the few that by chance are able to handle them to take over. That’s not a particularly comforting prospect.
