Mobius. I appreciate what you're saying, but with one correction. Among other hats, I'm a recently retired farmer with years of experience using GPS tracking solar powered, water pumps. From that experience I can confirm that the sky can be as black as (name your simile) with torrential rain, and even though power is diminished by circa 40%, my pumps continued to work. Solar panels just don't stop working, no matter what level of cloud cover blots out the sun.
As far as base load goes, I presume you can continue to add batteries. In addition, the wind does not cease to blow after dark (wind generation). All a matter of scale and synergies. AND BIGGER BATTERIES, which will become more efficient as the tech progresses.
