I don’t disagree at all, we definitely should pick who comes to this country and the manner in which they come (to defer to JH). But your numbers above are not reflective of immigration in total. I noticed in the article that migrants from south east asia and Eastern Europe had substantially lower rates of joblessness. To me that sounds like these people are getting to work.
Regarding what I’ve seen, overall jobless rates at the recent census showed that recent immigrants were as follows: The unemployment rate for recent migrants and temporary residents was 7.4%, compared with 5.4% for people born in Australia. Migrants with Australian citizenship had an unemployment rate of 3.3%, temporary residents 8.6% and recent migrants on a permanent visa 8.8%.
The above is far from the fear mongering you are spreading, and when combined with results of specific regions, it makes it clear that people generally come to work and contribute and we only need to weed out those who don’t want to.
Regarding Sth African farmers or other Sth Africans who are highly qualified and want to work, I’m very happy for them to come because they integrate and contribute very well.
