I wish Mesoblast's corporate history was simple and easy to comprehend... but as you laid out, there have been a number of 'partners' come and go ... and some that just didn't quite eventuate.
Two of which fell apart due to circumstances outside of Mesoblast's control... namely the Cephalon/Teva and Mallinckrodt partnerships (or lack of).
As many would know, Cephalon was the first major partnership... and in my mind, would have flourished had Teva not taken over Cephalon. Teva being a generics based pharma, returned the assets purchased by Cephalon after it had acquired Allegran for US$40.5bn.
And more recently ... Mallinckrodt looked like they were going to take up the aGVHD and CLBP programs.. obviously looking to diversify away from their opoid reliant P&L... however that reliance caught up with them earlier than they would have liked.. and they are as you pointed out, not that much bigger than MSB.
Although this was not ideal at the time, in hindsight I believe we dodged a bullet... as I believe that it would have been worse if we partnered with MNK, signing away our CLBP and aGVHD program.. only to have MNK shelve them due to funding issues... yep that would have put MSB in a much worse off position than that we find ourselves in today.
As today MSB is funded for 12 months, with four programs ready for partnership (adult aGHVD, CLBP, RA and CHF) one of which is RMAT designated and reading out full trial results in Sep18 ... not to mention a FDA phase 3 success in pediatric aGVHD which MSB will take to market on its own in late 2019.
It seems great pharmaceutical companies are hard to build given the long, rough and often perilous road a small R&D biotech must take in order to achieve commercial success... Mesoblast have had their fair share of adversity.. but right now, the future is looking very bright for stem cell technology and for Mesoblast...
MSB's future is really in its own hands and that of its clinical trials.. and that is exactly how I want it to be as a shareholder.
