If your budget allows and the location of the build is sought after (prime), then an 'reputable' architect is a good idea. Generally speaking architect designed homes will always command a significant premium. That said, using an architect to design a contemporary house to be built in a cheap, working class suburb is a waste of money when you consider that there are plenty of project design homes that originate from architects. Only difference being that they are not one-ofs.
Even so, rural/farm type settings, due to views and general ambiance, lend themselves to architectural creativity.
