And please correct me if I'm wrong, but ionic compounds usually dissociate in water (i.e. exists are free ions), and there are very few exceptions.

You should get a bucket full of sea water and find out for yourself.
btw, Bromine and Iodine are very reactive.
Have you heard of Bromine and Iodised salt?
They are very common, you can find them in your supermarket store.
At the end of the day, that is exactly what we are talking about - different kinds of salt in brine water.
We want high concentration of Lithium sal t in these brine water (yes, I know there are other chemical bonding).
But that is the bottom line.
