If so, then what effect does differences in electronegativity have on the dissociation of ions in solution? By my understanding, bromine and iodine, with electronegativities of 2.74 and 2.21, have a substantially greater electronegativity (>2) than most of the group 1 and group 2 elements. This would mean that compounds formed with the bromide and iodide anions with these group 1 and group 2 elements like you have mentioned should be ionic compounds by definition. And please correct me if I'm wrong, but ionic compounds usually dissociate in water (i.e. exists are free ions), and there are very few exceptions.
